Approaches to teaching and learning are deliberate strategies, skills and attitudes that permeate the teaching and learning environment. These approaches and tools, intrinsically linked with the IB learner profile attributes, enhance student learning and assist student preparation for DP assessment and beyond. (IBO, 2014)
The Core Curriculum at BSJ has been developed to ensure a specific focus on the explicit teaching of these ATL skills:
Students are also expected to develop and demonstrate these skills through their subjects and in their daily interactions at school.
When we look at some of the top skills required by employers, we can see why the focus in education at this level needs to be on these Approaches to Learning. The focus has very much shifted from subject knowledge to an ability to learn, and this reflects the fast-moving age in which we live. We can no longer ‘know-it-all’, instead we need the ability and determination to ‘find-out’.
